Markham discusses his travels to the Mid-West to speak about a dear departed friend whos ashes were brought overseas to Japan. He was upset he didnt have to opportunity to stop in Columbus to see them. He had an engagement in Manhattan. He wants her to remember him to Marjorie and Marion and regards to her husband.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
